Inherited Car - Need California Smog Help

Postby cpaulreed » Mon Jul 10, 2017 6:58 pm

Hi All,

I acquired a 1982 Fiat Spider after my fathers passing. The car lived in VT for the last 15-20 years. I am looking to have it shipped to Los Angeles and trying to find a mechanic who will help me get it to pass smog.

Any recommendations on mechanics? Any other recommendations for passing the test?

Thanks in advance.

Get hold of Mark at Allison's Auto in Ontario Ca. Well versed in dealing with California's smog issues with these cars.

A 1982 is fuel injected so not knowing CA laws can't say for sure but I would think it might be good as is.

If the car is running and driving currently it will probably pass. That said, a new converter from the local California exhaust shop would probably help even a worn out 124 since the modern designs are so much more efficient.

Seconded. Mark's shop (the address is actually in Upland, off the 10 fwy) is the place. I was told by a local guy in Orange County that my 77 probably wouldn't make it through smog this year. Allison's got it through without any issues.

If you're in Northern CA talk to KD at Wine Country Motors in Napa.

Perfect. Thanks for all the info. I've decided to do some of the initial work myself (new CAT, fluids, spark plugs ect...) and then I'll bring it to and expert if it doesn't work! Good to know the right person to bring it to when I run into trouble.
