Map box / Speaker box top

Keeping it sharp - paint, wax, detailing, etc.

Map box / Speaker box top

Postby stuartrubin » Wed May 10, 2017 7:59 pm

The previous owner (or more likely before him), began installing a stereo and was kind enough to cut holes in the map boxes (I think that's what they're called), but did not provide any kind of top or lid for them. Clearly they will sound and look terrible without being closed up.

Can anyone recommend a way to make (or buy?) a top for these? Or maybe there's a cheap ready-to-go complete speaker box to fit in the space?

Thanks

Simple...just make a pattern from cardboard then transfer it to mdf board, or plywood, and cover that with vinyl. In fact, lining the inside of the side with mdf board will greatly improve the sound.

Thanks, Jim, that sounds like a reasonable idea!

I was thinking of laser cutting a lid from thin wood, but I like the idea of lining the box that's there, too. Also the wood lining can act as a support for the lid.

And thin wood and vinyl are cheap (like me)!

"Italian poplar" and other "bendable plywood"s, are easily available from plywood sources, and will conform to the back of those map pockets really well.
