OMG wiper gasket replacement is a nightmare

Postby zachmac » Fri Mar 24, 2017 12:12 pm

So I just added another task to the "damn near impossible" list. Properly seating the gasket where the wiper wire bundle and the washer hose pass through the firewall. I gave up trying with the hose and wire harness in the gasket and with just the gasket finally got it seated. I was then able to push each wire through separately after removing them from the connector and unwrapping the tape. Then of course had to re-tape everything and reinstall the wires into the connector, being careful to not break off any of the little locking tabs as I bent them back out to get them to lock in. What a PITA!

On the plus side the new single speed wiper motor from AR and my freshly cleaned and lubricated wiper arm assembly all work like a champ. Plus I was able to eliminate the two grey wires to the connector so it was easier to get them all through the gasket. Four wires instead of six. The wiper still works on both intermittent and steady steering column switch positions and I can now use that two speed switch on the dash for an ignition cutoff or fan override or whatever I decide I need.

I may still go back and wire in a relay for the steady speed wire to make sure I am getting full volts but the intermittent can operate at whatever speed so only one relay will be needed. I'll see what kind of wiper speed I get when running with full volts.

Glad to hear the wiper motor is working well. If you are considering relays, We now have wiper relay kits in stock:

https://autoricambi.us/products/wiper-relay-kit

Mind you, for the single speed motor only one relay is needed, you could easily DIY that.

Cool. Is the wiper wiring easily accessible without removing the cowl?

No, you have to remove the cowl. Right now kit has the early type connectors, but we will be working on a version for the 1979-on Spiders as well.

Do you include wiring diagram to setting up the relays.
