Water leak from the driver side upper window

Postby MikeAyuso » Thu Oct 19, 2017 5:29 pm

Hi Experts,

For the first time, I was caught in the rain driving my 1984 124 Spider with the top on and windows up, and water was dripping down from the top of the window driver right at the corner next to the vent window. I could see the lip of the vinyl top hanging over the top edge of the window, but water still pouring in. Is there some adjustments or fixes to either the vinyl top, window, or anything else?

Thanks,
Mike

Unfortunately, a leak along the front edge of the windshield header at the left end is rather common and very hard to fix. Carry a towel to cover your leg.

Thanks I will in the meantime. However, it's strange because the passenger side doesn't leak even if the rain is coming from the other direction. I will try to compare or take it to a body shop to see if i am missing something even though it looks normal with the naked eye.

If the top is offsided slightly to the passenger side it will drip on the drivers side plus since the drivers door is used more than the passenger door there is also the chance that the drivers door will be a fraction of an inch lower. When you close the top which latch do you secure first? Try latching the drivers side first next time. Is the gasket across the front bow still glued its entire length to the bow especially along its upper edge? If not water will get driven up between it and the top bow and follow the curve of the windshield dripping out on the sides with crown on the road making it more likely to drip on the drivers side. If the rivets or screws were left out where the top and flaps were installed to the front bow or the cables missing then it can leak too. Also check that the rubber bumper on the top of the seal between the door and windshield frame is not cracked or missing.

Even my lovely canvas top has a space between the windshield frame/weatherstripping and the 'puffy' weatherstrip over top of the both of the door windows. It will leak a bit,...
Convertibles,...not meant for inclement weather.
