cam gears 180 off

Postby Spider951 » Sun Apr 15, 2018 6:53 pm

I have a spare engine from an '82 spider (132 C3.031) that I plan to use as a replacement in my '81 Spider while I work on the '81 engine (fix oil leaks, etc). I pulled the timing belt cover off the '82 engine today to take a look at the belt condition (I have no real info on the spare engine , except supposedly only has 58,000 mi on it, and is considerably cleaner on the outside than the '81). The engine can be rotated by hand and appears to have no obvious issues. But I discovered the timing marks on the intake cam gear and exhaust cam gear are 180 deg apart, i.e both are at TDC for cylinders 1 and 4 at the same time but the marks - small holes relative to pointer- are off by 180 deg. Both cam gears are numbered with a small "3" and the intake gear is also marked "EF"; exhaust gear has another mark, possibly another, larger "3" (?). Is one of the gears these simply lined up wrong (I have never pulled cam gears off)? Is this of any concern? (I will be replacing the timing belt, new plugs, etc before installing in the car). Thanks

OK. I think I have it figured out: the intake cam gear mark and pointer line up on cylinder no. 4 compression, and exhaust cam gear mark is at pointer on no. 1 compression. It just took one look at what's under the distributor cap  . [ Perhaps I had to have my brain properly numbed before looking at the engine again this p.m.......that opportunity being afforded beforehand by 5 delightful hours delving into the arcane intricacies of IRS form 1040, capital gains and/or losses, itemized deductions, etc.etc, ad nauseum, not to mention our state income tax forms]. Maybe '82 engines were just set up that way; it's not what I was used to seeing.

Let try to rephrase my question: How is it possible that the Exhaust cam gear is 180 deg off from where it should be as compared to Intake cam gear? I have now removed gears and highlighted fitment pins to show this situation.

Not sure what images you are trying to post, but it looks like you may have two intake or two exhaust cam pulleys, also maybe the aux shaft pulley maybe installed on one of the cams. I think the aux pulley is the same as the Exhaust cam pulley.

Thank you. [Yes, obviously I have issues with getting the photo to post - may go back to photobucket after this fiasco.] The photo was intended to show the pin locations on the exposed ends of the camshafts, with the Intake gear pin located at about 11 o'clock position and the Exhaust side pin at about 7 o'clock. So this is normal and is normally taken care of by the pulleys (gears) to make holes align with pointers?
This is the first time I have ever removed any gears on a DOHC engine; I'm only doing it on this '82 ("spare) engine so I can replace gears, seals & timing belt. A while back I replaced the timing belt on the '81 engine that is currently in the car, but did not replace gear seals and now have significant oil leaks in front of engine.

Thanks for your help.
Steve

To display a picture from Flickr (that's what I use too) you click on the picture. When it comes up you click on the "Share Photo" link in the lower right. That will bring a pop-up box up. Select "embed" at the top; select medium size; then copy the web address that comes up. In the case of the picture below it will look like this:

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/149410674@N03/41721967801/" title="Camshaft alignment5"><img src="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/865/41721967801_5a687c2ea4.jpg" width="500" height="367" alt="Camshaft alignment5"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Paste that between the IMG markers created when you click "Img" at the top of the posting window. Then delete out everything that's not the web address. In the case of the example above you end up with:

https://farm1.staticflickr.com/865/4172 ... 7c2ea4.jpg

Hit the "Preview" button to make sure you did everything right and you get ->

The pulleys (gears) look to be the right ones (intake on right and exhaust on left in pic below arranged as they were pulled from camshafts). Sorry to be so ignorant/dense, but I still don't get it. So the exhaust camshaft is not where it's supposed to be with respect to pointers?

You should remove the cam cover to see the position of the cam.
