Hushmat

Postby So Cal Mark » Wed Mar 02, 2016 11:02 pm

We're now set up as a Hushmat distributor. All of the various sound deadening and heat block products are in stock. Hushmat products are rated higher than Dynamat for heat blockage, so it's a great product to insulate your interior.
One of the reasons we hooked up with Hushmat is that have agreed to develop a custom kit for the Spider which will come with pre-cut
insulation for easy installations.

A solution for the underside of the large bump hood would be really nice!

Hi Mark. A custom kit would certainly be nice in saving time! If nothing else, printable templates we could tape on and cut out would also save us time, and perhaps keep the product cost down from a pure custom solution. Either way, when do you anticipate the kits will be available?

I have the underhood kits in stock now. These do need to be cut to fit but the panels are large enough that each panel covers one side of the hood. This material is easily cut with scissors and features peel and stick adhesive

Please post a pic of the hood liner installed on a big bump hood. I need insulation but I don't want it to be silver.

Mark,
I put in a new down pipe and my engine compartment seems to be hotter now. In fact, my hood is getting hot to the touch from the outside near/above the exhaust.

Question: If I put the hushmat on the back of the hood (per your pictures) will this actually reflect the heat (rather than let the hood radiate it) and increase the temp inside the engine compartment?

I'm not sure what to do about the extra heat, but I'm afraid unless I do something, the paint on my hood will become damaged.

Thoughts?

it should reflect the heat, protecting the hood

I did the install a few day's ago and have put several hundred miles on the car with it. It is black and a bit shiny. Some of the pictures make it look silver, but it isn't, that's just reflection.

The install is easy to do, but very difficult to get "perfect". You have to sort of stick it on in the middle, and then use a razor/box cutter to get it to the exact size, and then sort of cram it under the seam.

Observations:
1) It makes the car quieter
2) It makes the hood heavier ( a few pounds) and makes the hood sound very "solid" when closing
3) It does keep the outside of the hood cooler- considerably. This is the reason I got it - to reduce the temp on the hood. But, there is still heat
4) My car seems to run about 5 degrees hotter and doesn't have as much temperature variability (that is the needled doesn't drop below 190 as far as it used to. This might be a good things (definitely in colder climates) but I'm interested to see what happens to the temp on a really hot day. (That is, will the fan be running more often) It's been very mild here.
5) I have significant left over "scraps". I'm thinking about adding a a second layer over the exhaust manifold where the hood gets hottest, and wondering if I can use some on the transmission to quiet it down a bit.
6) I had no problem getting it to contour with my small bubble hood
7) I did this solo, and I'm really bad with wrapping presents and getting things cut properly and looking nice. Figure it will only look better if you have some skill in this department.

So far - I like it - but don't expect you'll be able to put it on and have a "smooth as glass" installation. By it's very nature is has some wrinkles in it. It looks very functional, not glamorous.
