Hood Removal

Once again I searched and am at a loss Does anyone have instructions (photos are always a big help) on how to remove the hood?

this is an exercise fraught with peril. having an extra person or 2 is a must. the hood is held on by each hinge with 2 bolts each. remove the spring or the sliding rod first. once this is disconnected, the hood is free to swing forward until something you dont want to happen happens, so one person's job it to keep this from happening. best to loosen all 4 bolts until they are almost ready to fall out. while holding the hood on both sides in a near vertical position, remove the 4 bolts and lift the hood away. If you dont have any help, you can open the hood and clamp the top to a vertical 2x4. this will help hold the hood, but it is still very unstable and easy to lose control. good luck, you will need it

I'll second the two person removal. It is not heavy so the better half can help if required. VERY easy to prang the paint on both the hood and fenders when removing . I take a thin felt pen and mark the hinges to the inner fender before removing. That helps in alignment when putting the thing back on (again two people)

I remove the hood alone in a garage. I screwed an eye bolt into the ceiling joist above the hood. Open the hood tie a close line like rope to the hood latch on the hood then pass the rope through the eyelet and tie it off. Next remove the bolt that holds the round plastic disk in the center of the hood torsion spring. Roll the car so the hood points straight up and re-tie the hood in this position. Now remove the 4 bolts that hold the hood to the fenders. Push the car back away from the hood. Lower the hood slowly with the rope.

I just did this for the winters projects.

As above, 2 people are best.

I used green painters tape on the body near the hinges. Painters tape first to protect the paint and then duct tape to stop the hood from tearing the painters tape.

Saved me a few extra scratches.

PS it is reasonably light. I am storing mine on the convertible roof.

Before removing the bolts I always outline the hinge with a non permanent marker. Makes lining it up to reinstall easier.

pre marking your hinge location is a great idea. I drill two 3/16" holes in each hinge while mounted and aligned. when you put the hinge back on, put a couple of 3/16" drill bits in each hole and you dont have to mess with realignment. I do the same thing with door hinges.
